This blog is really about short-term fear and pain management using mBIT. My early career started as a sports therapist and there are very few approaches to healing sports related injuries that I haven’t had some experience of, either as a therapist or client. I thought it might be fun to write about managing short-term pain (or the idea of it).
Have you ever had one of those sports massages that you dread going to, but you know in your mind that there is value from going along. Perhaps not even a sports massage, maybe you have simply gone for a deep tissue massage to release some tension within your muscles, or we could just as easily be talking about osteopathy, chiropractic treatment, physio… Any physical therapy where joints and muscle are being manipulated in some way to alleviate discomfort.
Let me take you on a journey through a potential (and familiar) experience… and then a more optimal mBraining approach…
I am lying on the couch and going through the preparatory phase of the treatment the soft tissues around the treatment area being warmed and the articulations within the joints are being eased somewhat, ready for the dreaded pain-inducing part of the treatment.
My breath… is uneven and I am holding my breath every time the therapist goes near my pain areas.
My head is chatting away… “Come on now, you know you need to just relax… if you don’t relax, you won’t really get the benefit of the treatment, because you’ll tense up and limit the therapist’s ability to help you. Of course… They might not be really qualified… you know… a qualification that actually means something. You can do real damage y’know messing with people’s necks… spine… (insert whatever part of the body you like)… What if their actions actually injure me… like a really significant life-changing injury… How long did they say they have been practicing…
My heart… Beating a little faster is having sensations along the lines of I don’t know if I really trust this therapist…
My gut… Knotted up in a ball, is hiding, I have my teeth clenched and I am pretty sure I am not swallowing. I have sensations along the lines of “oh no, n, n, n, noooo brace yourself, this is going to really hurt…
So what is going on? Well I am certainly not breathing well and my head is very noisy for sure; making up all sorts of stories and sowing seeds of doubt. My heart has lost sight of its connection to the therapist and even its connection to myself – I am almost attempting to have an out-of-body experience, so that I can escape any discomfort and this is exacerbated by my gut basically hiding away. I expect I am not the only person who has been here… tense and in a space of head-based “logic says this will help, so grit your teeth and get through this” survival.
So how can we do things better.
Well I have tested the following strategy on both remedial sports massage and on osteopathy… at key moments… for me, calves, quads and some very sneaky back knots for the former… and back twists and neck realignment for the latter.
Here are four areas of focus that could dramatically reduce your pain and anticipation of pain.
- Breath: come back to reminding yourself of your balanced breathing… if necessary slightly lengthen the exhale… maybe 6 seconds in, 9 seconds out.
- Check in with the heart; have gratitude for gifting yourself this treatment. Acknowledge from your heart that being here is a reflection of valuing and showing care for yourself and your wellbeing.
- Check in with your head to use your creativity to envisage yourself like jelly – use your mind to notice how you can relax and soften each part of your body. Attend with your mind to your breath – keeping it busy with finding all the ways you can be as limp as possible (for me, imagining myself like a springy jellyfish works really well).
- Check in with your gut and from this space, know you are safe and that your gut has the role of protecting you – after all that is exactly why you are here. You are the kind of person who looks after yourself, this is part of being a healthy, resilient individual. Use your gut to lean into temporary discomfort.
If you choose to cycle around heart, head, heart, gut and heart, you can – but for me, this act of simply breathing well and communicating with three brains has great effect.
There is a second strategy I have used that might be helpful to regroup if you find yourself going into the old pattern… and that is using humour to check in with the head brain when it goes off the rails.
It goes like this…
Hey there head… I really love your creative story telling y’know. You sound super busy doing gut’s job… and making up the most amazing stories of doom… how’s that working out for you?
For me this is a great pattern interrupt, because once we have each been mBraining for a while, our head will know it is out of line and respond with.. “ok… ok… you got me… lets regoup… what shall we do…” and I can then get back to my breathing to invite more wisdom in.

Making resolutions can be done differently, embodying mBraining in your life means you do things differently, more sustainably.
New year’s resolutions interest me – for a long time I have felt that they are probably a good thing – and yet, at the same time they have never held much appeal. Perhaps because being in a post-Christmas state and thinking of “All the things I should be doing” can feel slightly depressing! At best they have felt like yet more things to add to my to do lists. So I’m curious – If you have made one or more resolution this January – how are they going?
Rather than make resolutions this New Years day – Steve and I went for a walk in the countryside and it had a profound effect on me. My heart lifted and felt so light and free; I was deeply touched by the beauty of our surroundings, and I felt a joyous gratitude in our companionship as we walked. My mind became quiet and still – settling in to the freedom and simplicity of walking in nature. I could appreciate anew, and with a pure clarity how precious this is to me. I also felt a pleasurable strength and wellbeing in stretching my legs and covering the miles, a tingling sense of being fully and vibrantly alive.
My whole being responded so profoundly, that I felt a deep, resonant wish to do more of this in 2019. I was surprised that when I posted this on facebook, a friend replied ‘What a great resolution’ and I suddenly realised where my resolutions had been going wrong in previous years.
Resolutions at New year don’t need to be a head-based statement of what we ‘should’ be doing differently , but instead can be a fully embodied: head, heart and gut expression of what our soul deeply longs for. Imagine how it would be to have your whole being resonating, aligned and moving naturally and easily towards what you truly wish for….. I could do all of that, but what you really want to know is what it’s like to experience a session, don’t you? That’s why I asked one of my clients to tell you about her mBIT coaching experience in her own words, so here’s her story.
“When I first heard about mBIT, I thought “Oh my life! What on earth!”
I expected it to be much more “touchy feely” with the idea of reading your own body. I was quite sceptical! I’m pretty open minded, but only tend to go so far on the touch feely stuff, which is what I thought it might be.
It felt like it was outside of my limits. The more I found out about it, I could see that it made sense but I’ve always struggled to listen to my body so it felt like quite a challenge. Not many of us do listen to our bodies any more, until it reaches the point of pain or illness.
I trusted my coach, so agreed to give it a go! Also, I was interested in new techniques, and quite curious. I also knew that I was in a safe space and could speak up at any time if I felt that it wasn’t working for me.
We agreed the issue then and explored where I am now and where I wanted to be, and what was stopping me, keeping me stuck. Then, Nicki talked me through how to achieve balanced breathing, and guided me move my awareness to my heart, gut and head, asking questions as we moved around.
It’s quite hard to explain, but when we finished, it felt just like I’d had a deep meditation session! There was one moment in particular when I received such a powerful message from my heart that the emotional response was almost overwhelming. I also felt like my gut has control at the moment – it felt like it was the naughty bit, I’m not sure how else to explain it.
So, how would I describe the experience? It’s a whole new level of coaching. You get a deeper connection to your thoughts and feelings from your body. It’s hard, or at least not always easy, because you go back to your head to think. It can be difficult to switch off, but you have to invest in it.
I’d definitely say that it gives you a more intense, deeper understanding. I’m not sure if I’d even have got there (reached theinsights) in a different coaching session. The power comes from the heart for me. It made me want to know more!
So, if you’re stuck, and other things haven’t worked, use this. You have to go with it, switch off and listen. Sit with it, keep repeating the question, and something will come. Don’t overthink, ignore the immediate “I don’t know” that pops into your head. It’s definitely worth it.”

We are pleased that you have found this site, it is a culmination of many hours of work that brings together the trainers and coaches of the mBraining community here in the UK & Ireland.
I first encountered mBraining through my wife Reb Veale, who being an early adopter, had seen an article written by Grant Soosalu in 2013. So enthused at what she had read, she looked to see where the next training was taking place, only to find out that it was in Australia. Instantly realising that this was not realistic for her she contacted Grant directly.
As it happened Grant had just agreed to come to the UK with Marvin Oka to run the first mBIT Coach Certification Training in Europe. Forward pace a couple of years and I was completing a Coach Certification Training, this time with Dr Suzanne Henwood in Birmingham in 2015, the week before the 2nd UK mBIT Trainers Training in Bath on which Reb was a participant.
So here we are in the later stages of 2018, with 13 active trainers in the UK & Ireland and a larger number of coaches, many who use their skills and knowledge in the organisations they work in and the others who work as independent coaches, facilitating and working with clients on a one to one basis to achieve their true potential.
